The most misunderstood dynamic in the recording process.

If you’ve never recorded before, you’re likely curious about the process. While we have a lot of great posts and videos on the recording process, I wanted to take a moment and clarify the most commonly misunderstand dynamic of the recording experience.

Whether through movies or just general misunderstanding, It’s important for artist to remember — they are the boss. It's easy for an engineer or producer to take control of the recording process, but ultimately, it's the artist's music that is being recorded. Here are a few reasons why we believe the artist should be in charge:

Artistic Vision

The artist has a unique artistic vision for their music that should be respected and honored throughout the recording process. The engineer or producer should work closely with the artist to ensure that their vision is realized while enhancing and clarifying that vision.

Creative Direction

The artist should have the final say on creative decisions such as arrangement, instrumentation, and production techniques. While the engineer or producer may have suggestions or ideas, the final decision should be left to the artist.

Trust and Respect

Trust and respect are crucial components of a successful recording experience. The artist should feel comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns to the engineer or producer without fear of being dismissed or ignored. The engineer or producer should respect the artist's opinions and ideas and work collaboratively to achieve the best possible outcome.

The artist should be the boss of the recording experience. By maintaining artistic control, creative direction, and open communication, the artist can ensure that their music is recorded in a way that honors their unique vision and talent.
